Nerve Blocks or Neural Blockade

How does a nerve block help to eliminate chronic pain?

Nerve blocks have been used for more than a century to treat chronic pain in the lower back, and more recently by physicians as an effective treatment for chronic pain in other parts of the body, like the arms, legs and neck. A local anesthesia and corticosteroids such as cortisone or hydrocortisone are most often used in nerve block treatments, with numerous studies providing promising results for temporary to long term relief of chronic pain, as well as patient testimonials reporting decreased pain and increased range of motion that lasts for hours, days and even weeks.

Nerve block procedures are performed on site at one of our six Advanced Pain Management locations in Phoenix, Glendale, Avondale, Tempe, and Mesa. The procedure is quite simple, and involves injecting local anesthetics and corticosteroids into the chronic pain area, resulting in a temporary relief of chronic pain and increased range of motion that can last anywhere from hours to weeks.

How Does it Work?

Medical experts believe that nerve block injections interrupt the signals sent from the pain receptors to the brain, allowing muscles to relax and breaking the body’s self-sustaining pain cycle. There have also been numerous studies which show that the anesthesia injection actually stop nerve fibers from functioning. An additional benefit is that corticosteroids act as an anti-inflammatory, helping to further reduce pain and allowing damaged muscle and tissue to heal.

Although the benefits of nerve blocks may only be temporary, for the person experiencing chronic pain it can be a welcome relief, no matter how long it lasts. In addition to the nerve block treatment, the physicians at Advanced Pain Management AZ may also prescribe physical therapy or exercise to help strengthen the muscles and further ensure that the chronic pain does not return.
